This is James. he is a lovely guy, and ALSO our corporate Art Director. “Art Director” you say? Aren’t they those irritating people that stand behind you when you are building a site and point at stuff?
Well – they are. Or in fact used to be. There are entire websites dedicated to catching this rapidly dwindling species in action (http://hoveringartdirectors.tumblr.com). James is one of the new breed who are trying to re-invent the profession to cope with the massively increased fluidity when you design for mobile + web + paper + social media + an increasing number of media that you really have no control over.
He recently presented his vision of how Art Direction should be at Future of Web Design London, and it seemed to go down a storm. He makes a convincing case to move away from “Art Direction as micro management” towards a more fluid “Art Direction as brand curation”.
